Benridge EMI Rest Home in Southport, has been undergoing an exciting transformation of late. With the guidance of their new manager, Lisa McLaughlin, the team have left no stone unturned in re-assessing every aspect, from person centred care, individual activities, nutrition, to staff morale and training. Particular attention has been made in listening to both Service Users and their relatives in determining what they feel are the requirements of a care home and the extras that they would like to see made available to them.
Lisa is the daughter of the proprietor and whilst she grew up and worked in the home in her younger years, she decided to pursue a career in banking. After 17years, she is now very much back on the helm and her 10 years management and project experience is proving to be invaluable in taking Benridge forward.
Her first task was to spend time interacting with other healthcare experts and has sought feedback from numerous professionals such as charge nurses, ward managers, social workers, nutritionists and the Alzheimers Society.
Lisa has said “Their feedback initially was difficult to take on board; however, we have now addressed all of the issues raised and listened to their advice”. “The achievements that we have made in such a short period of time have been staggering”.
“Our prime focus has been around Person Centred Care and Dignity for our residents. We want to ensure that everyone is treated with respect and is given the opportunity to live as much of an independent life as is safely feasible”. “We understand the support that can be needed by both service users and residents on deciding to make that step of coming to a care home”.
We are working on building relations and are in the process of setting up a working group of relatives and service users to work with us in developing our new ideas and activities.
In the last 3 months the home has changed beyond recognition, with the ground floor having a major re-vamp. We now have a refreshing and stimulating activities lounge, a cosy TV lounge and a very tranquil feel to the home. We have also seen the addition of 2 rabbits and a tropical fish tank that have been a joy to all and helps provide sensory therapy.
Lisa and her management team are currently in the process of developing comprehensive training plans for all staff. This will enable the team to deal with and understand all forms of dementia in more depth and offer the advice and support to all those concerned.
We recently held a Victorian Tea Party for all the residents, friends, family and healthcare professionals to enjoy and also to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society and for our mini bus fund.
It was touch and go for a moment, as the decorating to the whole of the ground floor was only just finished in time for the event to take place.
It was a rather grand affair, with china tea sets, smoked salmon sandwiches, Cake tiers full of cream cakes and strawberry scones, a cupcake display, fresh flowers, bagatelle, board games and raffle prizes to be won.
The old time music hall entertainer and music from Al Bowly and Glen Miller created the perfect ambience to take us back in time.
We finished the afternoon off in style, with the arrival of a vintage car courtesy of Birkdale Classics.
We would like to thank all those companies that helped us in making the afternoon possible:
Dobbies Garden Centre for the loan of their cake tier stands and providing some of the cakes, Westminster Tea Room for their excellent support, music and china, Bobbies Girl for the cupcakes, Goldielle Promotions for the entertainment and as previously mentioned Birkdale Classics.
Also a big thank you to those that have donated raffle prizes: - Westminster Tea Rooms on Lord Street, Briars Hall Hotel, The Beauty Barn in Birkdale and The Boatyard (canal side pub) in Preston. www.briarshallhotel.co.uk, www.boatyardhoghton.co.uk.
So far, we have raised £200 for Alzheimer’s and £150 for the minibus, with donations still to be received.
The Alzheimers society wrote, “At Benridge your staff team and you particularly, have made a great deal of effort and commitment to involving our experience and advice in complementing the high quality service you are determined to maintain. The redecorated ground floor is a delight and shows you have an understanding of dementia friendly spaces in which people can feel at ease or stimulated and involved depending on their need at any particular time. The atmosphere during my time there was a vibrant inclusive and happy home and my compliments and best wishes for all your future plans”.
Lisa finally says, “We could not have asked for a better accolade, in return for all the hard work that we have put in over the last couple of months and we hope that everyone will benefit in the future”.
